Please! Please! Please! Bring your dog to us before it looks like this.  No amount of monies will make us torture a dog.  A shave down is the only option in a case like this, so be prepared.

Should I shave my Pomeranian, his hair is so thick?

Not usually a good idea to shave a "double coated" breed.  The guard hairs may not return creating a bigger mess than what you think you've got now.  Guard hairs are the coats waxy long hairs that shed water and also are valuable at the time of shedding or blowing of the under-coat.  Most of these type of dogs once shaved become UN-manageable cotton balls.  If you opt to shave them anyway, you will need to keep on doing it to keep them from being insulated from air and shedding dander.

I have a non-shedding dog, he's a Schnauzer mix.  Why does he get matted so easily? What can I do to keep him in good shape between grooming's so I don't have a DE-matting charge at the groomers?

Non shedding dogs are great for your house and you if you have dander allergies.  Just because the hair doesn't fall out daily does not mean that it doesn't die and get replaced.  Just like our skin cells shed off every day  (dander),  our dead cells  are not trapped by a barrier; (unless you never take off your clothing!)  As your dogs fur/dead hair detaches from the follicle daily it is woven into the other hairs still alive and growing.
I recommend that you bathe your dog at home every two to three weeks and while you have them soaped up use your slicker type brush to remove the dead hair.  Do not let them dry out with dead hair still embedded, this will cause shrinking up of the mats.  Just like a wool sweater shrinks as it drys, the mats get tighter into the skin making it harder to remove them with out shaving, or discomfort to your dog.
